Wednesday 28 December: Kamala

Lots of stuff in the papers yesterday about locals being unhappy about the big Tsunami Memorials that were held on Boxing Day. Apparently they cost a fortune, which the locals naturally felt to be inappropriate with some tsunami-hit areas not yet having running water, etc. Apparently Miss Universe compered one of them (!) and there was jolly Thai music. Many foreigners held their own private ceremonies. People seem to feel that the Government just took over and ran it all as a propaganda affair to show that everything was alright now here - and that it wasn't really a genuine mourning and remembrance for the dead. Anyway, we are very glad we didn't have to participate in the end.

The AudienceToday we visit Kamala, which was very badly hit by the tsunami with the main school being completely destroyed (thank goodness the Tsunami struck on a Sunday, and the children weren't at school, otherwise several hundred of them would have died). The Thai King has personally paid for the building of a new school, which is currently only part-finished with about 250 pupils, but which will be completed in the next few months and then have 400 pupils.

StrongmanWe plan to arrive at 10.00 for a 10.30 show, but get caught behind a huge procession which makes us a bit late, but we manage to be set up and ready to start at 10.45. The show starts with about 150 children in the audience, but this swells to about 250 in the middle, when another group of children arrives after providing music for the procession we had got stuck behind. The show is fairly chaotic as there is a lot of coming and going as lots of other things are going on in the school, but the children love it. Jo's back seems a lot better and she and Jake do their acro piece, which goes down very well.

The AudienceWe drive on to the next school which is an infant school. We distribute badge centres and then head off for a quick lunch. We return and set up the show and San and I start badge-making. There turn out to be 180 children rather than 100, but that's fine as there is lots of space and we like large audiences. The show goes really well, and lots of parents watch for the last part before they take their children home.

Jo and JakeOh dear, this diary is getting very boring - I'm sorry! The problem is I have to either write it first thing in the morning when I am not properly awake, or in the evening when I am feeling very tired! I will try and explain all the different pieces in the show better tomorrow, and try to explain why it is such fun and why the children like it so much. I'm going to stop now as I am very tired and feel very, very, very boring - and there are more badge bits to cut out and circle, and I have rashly said I will cook pasta for dinner rather than us going out - but please be assured that the shows and workshops are not boring at all - they are the very opposite, and the children are enjoying everything tremendously, so all is well.Haggis with seven balls
